There are three tenets of the care provided in our dementia households.
Firstly, we ensure the physical environment is designed with as many visual clues as possible to compensate for memory difficulties and maximise a resident’s independence. For example doors are colour coded (red for bedrooms and yellow for bathrooms).
Secondly, we pay particular attention to the care teams responsible for delivering dementia care. We select people who are caring by nature and train to a high level of competency.
Thirdly, we place significant emphasis on communication. People with dementia often find it difficult to communicate in the ways that most of us take for granted. Many activities are therefore geared towards helping sensory communication, improving interaction and aiding recall. In line with the principles of providing choice, activities are available but not imposed. Activities may include:
